Tourist Guide to Franklin Park Zoo - A Wonderful Place to Bring Kids Along
Franklin Zoo in Boston spreads over an area of 72 acres. This zoo was thrown open for public in the year 1913 and is currently administered by zoo New England. It also manages the Stone Zoo in the city of Stoneham in Massachusetts. This majestic zoo is located in the northeast portion of the Franklin Park, which is also the Boston's largest park.
The park is also an integral part of the city's 1100 acre Emerald Necklace. It is linked by many parks through numerous waterways and pathways. The Zoo has received the prestigious accreditation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums in 1990. The basic idea of the zoo germinated into the mind of Frederick Law Olmstead in 1912.
Initially the zoo intended to house mostly native animals, but it also started to include exotic animals once it was built. Originally, the park was managed by the Boston Park Department but later on, it was taken over by Metropolitan District Commission. This re-shift of management was a boon for the zoo.
The new authorities began to house separate pavilions for separate animals. The zoo contains more than 220 species of animals including many exotic wildlife exhibits. The place has a exhibit known as Tropical Forest. It extends up to 3 acre and mimics the natural habitat of the animals. It has artificial streams, moats, hidden fences, gorillas, zebras, pygmy and many more. Some of the other exhibits include Serengeti Crossing, Kalahari Kingdom, Outback trail, Bird's World, Butterfly Landing, Children's Zoo, and Tiger tales.
