South Station is one of the most enduring symbols of Boston welcoming about millions of travelers every year. The station after being demolished in the year 1970 was again rebuilt as Gateway to Boston.

The station has immensely benefited the smooth flow of transportation. With the turn of a century, the South Station has developed itself to be one of the architecturally as well as efficient station of the nation. As a result of this the legislative body adopted a charter to the new company -Boston Terminal Company. Boston & Albany was the owner of the company.
With the help of the grants received, within a span of two years South Station became one of the major railroad stations. The first train services started from January 1, l899 from the South Station.

Over a period of 15 years it supported heavy traffic. It was during the time of World War II that it made records by accommodating 135,000 visitors in the halls.
The Boston Redevelopment Authority purchased the station in l965 for $6.95 million. There after the demolition of the building started in l970. The station was then listed among the National Register of Historic Sites due to uproar from the residents. This way the station was restored.
Over the years the word "New" was added to the South Station. It offered a direct access to indoor sports arena and MBTA. As the rehabilitation process of the building started the headhouse was reconstructed. Even today the station continues to reshape the landscape of Boston.
