The Bunker Hill Monument was built to honor the history of Bunker Hill. The granite obelisk was built between 1827 and 1843 in Charlestown. Record supports that the granite of this monument was collected from Quincy, Massachusetts. The monument has 294 steps to the top.

The Bunker Hill Monument is not exactly on the Bunker Hill. It is built on Breed's Hill. This is the actual place where the Battle of Bunker Hill took place.

The ground and monument was maintained by The Bunker Hill Monument Association till 1919 and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts undertook it. In 1976, The Bunker Hill Monument was converted into National Park Service and became a unit of Boston national Historical Park.

The first monument on this site was actually a wooden pillar almost 18 foot long. This was erected here by King Solomon's Lodge of Masons for honoring Dr. Joseph Warren. In the year 1823, a group of established citizens created the Bunker Hill Monument Association in order to construct a monument which would remind Americans of the famous battle with a sense of pride and historical importance. The building of the monument completed during 1842 and there is also a famous exhibit lodge which finished during the nineteenth century.
