Brief Intro to Boston Red Sox - History and General Team Information
The Boston Red Sox is a professional Boston based baseball team that was founded on 1901. The team was founded as one of America's League 8 franchise teams. The team's official home ground is in the Fenway Park since 1912. Initially knows as the "Red Stockings", John I Taylor in 1908 named it the "Red Sox".
The early years of Red Sox were marked by many victories, and the best among them was the historic win over Pittsburgh Pirates in the first World Series. The team went on to win many championships by the end of 1918. However not all went favorable for the team as they plunged into championship droughts known as "Curse of the Bambino". The team had to wait for 86 long years to taste ultimate success of winning the world championship in 2004.
Some of the happening instances during the curse period were Enos Slaughter's Mad Dash in 1964, Impossible Dream 1967, Bill Buckner's Error in 1986 etc. The team showed great strength and solidarity until they received favorable winning winds. In 1939, the team bought the contract of outfielder Ted Williams, starting an era that came to be known as "Ted Sox".
Former player Mike Greenwell was instrumental in bringing the team to City of Palm Parks, Florida for spring training sessions. The team also have a flagship radio station named WEEI, 850AM. The criteria for the players to have their numbers retired are, first, election conducted at national baseball hall of fame, secondly, at least 10 years of playing experience in the team.
