The Bunker Hill Monument, one of the first monuments in the United States, was built to commemorate a battle between British and Patriot forces which took place on June 17, 1775. The Battle of Bunker Hill actually happened on Breed's Hill and it was the first battle of the Revolutionary War.
Built to honor the memory of colonists who died in the conflict, the Monument is really an engineering marvel of its time. The granite obelisk stands 221 feet tall at Breed's Hill and becomes a landmark that can be seen from miles away. It takes almost 17 years to build the Bunker Hill Monument, but climbing over its 294 steps to get to the top might only cost you an hour or so. There isn't any elevator inside the Monument, so you have to climb by yourself. It might be a little tired but the amazing vista at the top of the Monument would be well worth it.
