
Harvard University
Harvard University is the oldest private university in Cambridge. It is also the oldest learning corporation in America. The university influences education at both college and secondary levels. It is ranked at top of international universities with second largest financial endowment standing at $28 billion as in 2008. The college was established in 1635 and is one of the oldest learning institution in the United States.
Initially Harvard University offered academic courses based on the English University model offering education to some of the first colonists in New England. It established the Indian college in 17th century to educate native Americans. In the 17th century, Harvard experience financial growth placing itself in a league among American colleges.
With the twentieth century, Harvard University grew its reputation with prominent professors expanding the scope of the university. It experienced explosive growth in the student's population with the addition of new graduates to its list making the college most prominent schools in America for both boys and girls. After second world war the school experienced an increasing number of international students coming from all over America.
Today, Harvard University along with its affiliates are considered as politically liberal amongst American Universities. In 2007, Harvard approved division of engineering and applied science as its 14th school of Harvard. The school received a large sum as donation from Saudi Prince Alwaleed bin Talal favoring the research programs in Islamic studies.
With a faculty of 2400 professors the school serves 6700 under graduates and 12,400 graduate students till date. Governed by two separate boards, Harvard University today stands with its nine faculties in the field of Arts and science, Applied Science, Engineering, Law, Business, Divinity, Graduate school and Public Health. The school also has several athlete facilities, a multi purpose arena, indoor stadiums, basketball teams, cardio rooms and an Olympic size swimming pool. It is also a home to wrestling and fencing.
