Boston History

Capital of Commonwealth of Massachusetts and the historical center of New England, Boston history intertwines a lot with the history of America. Its deep harbor and geographical position has made it the busiest port in the Massachusetts Bay till 1760s when it became the largest, wealthiest and one of the most influential city of America.

The city was inhabited as early as 5000 B.C. and was named as Trimountaine, derived from the three prominent hills on the peninsula, one of which still remains to this day. On September, 1630 the city was renamed to Boston.

Boston history reflects that earlier it was a community with a very special covenant with God, thus influencing Boston life. These values molded the well structured life of today's Boston. Till this day, education remains an important part of Boston's culture. The roads provided connectivity to important cities like New York, with major settlements in Central and Western Massachusetts.

Boston played an important role in the American history. The Boston Massacre and the Boston Tea Party are a few of the important Boston historic events that have occurred near or in the city. Today these sites of Boston history simply remains as a popular Boston travel tourist spot.

The city has succeeded in preserving its revolutionary past. The city is an important trading port exporting rum, fish and tobacco. The city is also one of the largest manufacturers of garments and leather goods.

A network of small rivers bordering the city has made it an ideal place for the shipment of goods, thus allowing settlement of industries. During the nineteenth century Boston flourished culturally and became renowned for its artistic patronage which can be seen reflected in the Boston history.

Later it got caught up with automobile revolution and home to Porter Motor Company. Boston has faced several disasters killing many people and leaving hundreds homeless. It fell prey to several riots leaving deep scars.

Boston history shows that the city was slumping by 1950s, with only a few major buildings built. To combat this politicians enacted new policies resulting in building up of new structures and industries.

The new project for the development changed the face of the city with the demolition of older building and building new structures along with the survival of its historic neighborhoods. New towns and engineering structures were constructed including canals, roadways and public buildings. These structures changed the look of the city giving it a look of the modern Boston Mass travel city.
